Zoya Cherkassky and Orly Maiberg's 'Workplace' featured at Berliner Liste 2011
Zoya Cherkassky, Selection of drawing, 2011, mixed varies
The 8th edition of Berliner Liste will take place from September 8 - 11, 2011. More than 100 international galleries, projects and artists will present their most innovative and promising works. The fair covers a broad spectrum, ranging from contemporary sculpture, painting, drawing, installation, video art, performance, and photography.
Workplace is a site specific installation and collaborative piece conceived by artists Zoya Cherkassky and Orly Maiberg, who attempt to recreate the studio of an artist. Through their piece, they demonstrate the notion of inseparability between the artist and his or her work and workplace. Within the walls of the studio, the artist transforms into their artwork; they become the materials from which it is made. As Thomas Bernhard said, "The ideal piano player (he never said pianist!) is the one who wants to be the piano."The Loser, trans. Jack Dawson (Random House, 1991). The stain, color, and form of the product mirror the struggle, intentions, trials, errors, and quandaries of the artist-- the two become inseparable. In the artists' words, "We are so very much our workplace, that we decided to go out briefly and observe it from the side. Had the specific site of Berliner Liste 2011 been our workplace, this is how each of us would have sustained his or her place within it." The project was first shown at "Fresh Paint 4," April, 2011, Tel Aviv.
