LUMA Award 2011

The publication for the LUMA Award 2011, designed with Liam Gillick, documents the work of fifteen artists, all working with the image and the archive, selected by Tom Eccles, Liam Gillick, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Philippe Parreno, and Beatrix Ruf:

"This year for the second presentation of the LUMA Award, we have selected another fifteen artists to participate in a book by proposing photographs and texts. Without regard to age or notions of "the emerging", we have nevertheless privileged artists whose work we believe is compelling at this current moment. Thus the filmmakers Kenneth Anger and Jonas Mekas (both of whom were born in the 1920's) can occupy the same space as a younger generation such as Raya Martin, Trevor Paglen or Rania Stephan. We also bought together artists from Australia, Cyprus, England, India, Palestinian Jerusalem, the Philippines, and the United States."

This special publication constitutes a new form of show in itself.

"The artists nominated for this year's award, presented here in this freely distributed book, represent a focus upon research, archives, and what has broadly become known as "knowledge production." Rather than considering art as an isolated activity, they share a belief in the centrality of art and the image to the understanding of our time." (Maja Hoffmann)

The artists selected for the LUMA Award 2011 and featured in the book are: Shadi Habib Allah, Kenneth Anger, Uri Aran, Sharon Hayes, Desire Machine Collective, Aaron Flint Jamison, Helen Marten, Raya Martin, Jonas Mekas, Trevor Paglen, Christodoulos Panayiotou, James Richards, Albert Serra, Rania Stephan, and Erik Wysocan.

The book is freely distributed in Arles during the Rencontres d'Arles festival in 50000 copies.
